Mostly Coherent Ramblings of a Silicon Forest Software Developer

A Typical Programmers Toolbox

By: Jeremy Morgan

Recently my computer at work started to exhibit some problems, so I decided to do a full backup. I didn’t know this, but at the time the IT department did a snapshot of all the programs installed on the machine, which turned out to be quite a helpful list.

Here is a listing of all the programs I had installed and it gives you a good idea of what the typical programmer would use to do his/her job. At this time I am primarily developing in Linux, but in a previous position with this same company I was developing ASP/C# stuff and many of those programs were still installed so it shows a good variety of stuff. My reason for posting is to not only show the large variety of programs a typical developer might use, but also give you some ideas, there may be things you’ve never used before and decide to check out. Many of them are free/open source.
