Got a question about SEO?

Postby Jeremy on Tue Jun 24, 2008 3:23 pm

I get several emails a day asking for SEO advice, and I don't mind answering them at all, but I feel that the information should be shared with others. So from here on out, I'll ask people to post their question here, and I'll answer it.

I'll be giving out the same great advice, only this way everyone can share it!

Ask away!

I am a beginner at all this SEO stuff! When I first designed my companies website I didn't put in a keyword or description meta-tag and was ranking quite high for certain keywords. Now that I have added them in, our PR has gone down on google. Why is this? Also, is there a certain amount of keywords or phrases that I should be focusing on per page?

In my opinion, the meta tags likely had little to do with your PR drop. You might get fewer results if you are filling the meta tags with keywords, and it looks spammy to google.

A multitude of things can cause a PR drop, and it can be difficult to narrow down the reasons. Post a link to your site, and I can give you some clues as to why it happened, but I don't work for Google so I can't say for sure.

A general rule on Meta tags: Use the description tag only, and use it to create your own abstract beneath your link. Don't stuff it with keywords, design it with the search engine user in mind. Try to create text that will entice someone into clicking through. That's really all you should do with meta tags anymore.

I'll do a write up on this soon. Like I said if you want to post the link, I'll check out your site and let you know what I think.
